Trescott, Mitchell and Michalkowski Tops in Top 4 Wednesday Show
by Eric Fischer
August 9, 2006 - Englishtown, NJ - For the past four years, Raceway Park has invited our Top 4 points racers to be a part of the spectacular PC Richard & Son ALL AMERICAN JET CAR NATIONALS & MONSTER TRUCK show. This year, in recognition of the outstanding success of the East Coast Supercharging Corvette Challenge presented by Yank Racing Converters and Gear Star Transmission, Raceway Park decided to also invite the Top 2 points racers from The Vette Doctors Pro 8 Shootout presented by Neverlift Racecraft and the Top 2 racers from our newest class Cartek Racing Pro 10.0 presented by Silly Goose Racing Stables. In addition to receiving winner and runner-up plaques, the winners of each class will be receiving a cash payout for the first time (Corvette Challenge runner-up will also receive a cash award). It was special day indeed for the Corvette Challenge racers who participated in the show -- the weather conditions were superb and a crowd of thousands was on hand to witness our 8 drivers duke it out.
With many drivers unavailable due to other commitments or downed cars, Raceway Park had to make many calls to find drivers who could make the show. But the competition is always fierce in Corvette Challenge racing and whether you are #1 in the points or #13 the competition will always be tough. Seven of the drivers were new to this Wednesday night event while the eighth driver Rob Farley made final round appearances in both 2003 and 2005. Here is the participating field and results for the 2006 event:
Your participants were:
Corvette Challenge
- 1. Rob Farley - '98 Pace Car
- 4. James Kovitch - '88 Anniversary Vette
- 6. Eric Fischer - '98 Vette
- 7. John Trescott - '04 Vette
Round one was paired on a sportsman ladder and Farley and Fischer were the first pair out. With only one time trial and improving air conditions, choosing a dial-in proved to be very difficult. Fischer got the advantage at the tree (.027 to .054) and both Farley and Fischer break out by a wide margin. But Farley breaks out by less and gets the win with a 0.0027 MOV. Kovitch and Trescott are the next pair out and again both drivers break out but Trescott is closer to his dial with a 12.266 on a 12.28 and gets the win.
In the final round, #7 in the points Trescott takes on #1 Rob Farley. Farley leaves first but Trescott lays down a near perfect reaction time (.007) forcing Farley to break out at the top end. Trescott gets the win running a 12.308 on a 12.24.

Pro 10.0 Index
- 5. Tommy Michalkowski
- 7. David Shen
Again don't let the points position fool you, as even though Michalkowski is higher in the points, Shen appeared to be the favorite, outrunning Michalkowski by a few tenths in the warm-up session. But in the elimination Round Michalkowski was on his game gaining a huge reaction time advantage at the tree and taking the holeshot win with a 10.571 @ 129.40 to Chen's quicker but losing 10.302 @ 129.19.

Pro 8 Shootout
- 3. Mark Shaw - '70 Vette
- 13. Mike Mitchell - '86 Vette
Mike Mitchell in his '86 Vette did dual duty in both the CC Pro 8 and the Ultra Quick 8. Coming in the show at #13 in the points, Mitchell's position in the points reflects that he had did not attend either of the two Pro 8 events for 2006. On the brakes at the 1000 ft he turned in a blistering performance of 8.245 @ 145.81 in the Ultra Quick 8 qualifying session indicating his car meant business. In the CC Pro 8 Shootout elimination round, Mitchell got the jump off the line and was on the brakes at the 900'mark to take an easy win with an 8.271 @ 137.83 over Mark Shaw's 9.843 @ 141.06.

Mike Mitchell also qualified #4 in the Jesel Valvetrain Innovation Ultra Quick 8 presented by The Racer's Edge and in the 1st round ran a 8.025 @ 172.59 (looking to become the first Pro 8 driver in the 8's next week, August 19, 2006) but that wasn't enough to counter Mike DeMartino's awesome 7.308 @ 187.78.
It is quite an honor to be included in this grand show and congrats to all racers for a stand-up job representing the Corvette Challenge. Raceway Park puts on a great show and featuring Quick 8 cars, Jet Cars, Nostalgia Fuel cars, Fuel bikes, Wheel standers, Monster trucks, Sportsman racing and more. With guest commentating by the long time NHRA announcer Lewis Bloom, this is a show that is not to be missed.
