04/09/11 - Englishtown, NJ - Eight Corvettes came out to the third Cartek Performance Engineering Pro 10.50 of the season today, the second for points for 2011. Since we did not have more than the class allowed 8-car qualified field, none of the drivers would feel the pressure attempting to qualify to make the field. They would all be in round 1. Vincent Cupolo would take his second win of the season when defending class Champion Shawn Cavanagh lit the red light in the final round.

Qualifying

For the second race in a row, our top spot went to a driver who was dead-on the index. This time it went to Vincent Cupolo in his 1980 383 cid all motor Corvette with a 10.504 @ 128.33 MPH. David Shen, who was dead-on at the last race in qualifying as well, missed the number one spot by three-thousandths of a second was in the two spot with a 10.507 @ 126.23 MPH. He was followed by last race's runner-up Marshall Brown in his nitrous assisted, though not needed today, C5 Corvette with a 10.523 @ 129.23. 2010 Champion Shawn Cavanagh was in the fourth spot with a 10.594 @ 130.67 in his supercharged entry. The turbocharged entry of Russell DeLibero was in the fifth position with a 10.717 @ 91.33 MPH. The convertible C5 supercharged entry driven by Gregory Colella was sixth with a 10.768 @ 135.65 MPH. In the seventh spot was the Paul Bogdan in the silver supercharged entry with a 10.842 @ 127.14 and rounding out the eight was the third all motor entry, this one with 427 cid owned by Edgar Perez who was in with a 10.377 @ 125.00 with both his qualifying passes falling under the 10.50 mark.

Eliminations

On the way to the final, Shawn Cavanagh's day started with a trip to the gas station and an incident with manhole cover. The cover bent and displaced the cooling fans and bent the radiator. Luckily no fluid was lost. He tied down the fans and was able to make his qualifying passes and first round where he was met by Edgar Perez. The two left line with a .021 for Cavanagh to Perez's .043 light and ran up the track side by side, door to door, mano a mano the entire 1320 feet. Despite our announcer claiming Perez was on the brakes early (electrical issue keeping them on all the time) Perez trialed until the 1000'. At the point a small whomp of the throttle by Perez cost hi as Cavanagh got back around to take a .0013 margin win at the finish line despite Perez's quicker but losing 10.517 to Cavanagh 10.526. As close as that race was, his next match, against David Shen would be even closer though in double breakout fashion. Cavanagh took a .067 to .123 reaction time advantage. Shen made up some of that lost ground in the first half of the track and both drivers drove across the finish-line running under their index. Cavanagh got there first and was fortunate to breakout out the least in the double-breakout race. His 10.484 was better than Shen's 10.472.

On the other side of the ladder, Vincent Cupolo would use a .041 to .158 reaction time advantage to take the win over Russ DeLibero. Vinnie only needed a 10.617 @ 115.69 for the win. He then came up against Paul Bogdan who was having tuning issues with the car going into reduced power mode and only running in the 12's. How did he get to round 2 you ask, Marshall Brown rolled through the beams in round 1 on him. Cupolo's .026 green light and 10.622 ET were good for a trip to the finals.

In the final round Cupolo would be in the left lane and Cavanagh right. When the tree flashes, Cupolo was clean and green with a .022 reaction time. Cavanagh however made the first move but his was too early. A .009 red light made his opponent a winner for the second time this season in the 10.50 Index. Cupolo cross the finish line with a 10.540 @ 127.21. His day continued as he also made it to the semi-finals in the bracket class. Good work for a fast car. Watch out boys, Cupolo averaged .029 RT in his three rounds of eliminations.

2011 Points Standings

David Shen came in today on point and leaves with virtual share tied with event winner Vincent Cupolo with 160 points each. We do have a tiebreaker procedure but I will leave you in suspense for now. Cupolo is the second racer in a row to win the event from the number one qualifying position thus capturing the bonus 5 points afforded for the feat. Shawn Cavanagh moves into the third position with 110 points. Marshall Brown drops to the fourth spot with 109 points and he is followed the man he fouled to, Paul Bogdan with 106 total points in the fifth position.
