03/26/11 - Englishtown, NJ - Nine Corvettes came out to the second Cartek Performance Engineering Pro 10.50 of the season today, the first for points for 2011. A class that looks to have some exciting qualifying action with only 8 cars taken into the field. One of our entrants today will not make the field. It really puts a wrinkle in drivers qualifying strategy. David Shen was able to run his C2 Corvette to the win over Marshall Brown who rolled through the beams before the start of the race accidentally.

Qualifying

The top qualifying spot today went to David Shen with a 10.507 @ 126.22 in the 1967 Red Corvette. This came in his second attempt at qualifying with his first coming in at 10.57. He was followed in qualifying by Vincent Cupolo in his '80 383 cid all motor C3. with a 10.527 @ 128.15 MPH. Cupolo won the the first race of the season as an alternate after having run under the index in both qualifying passes. Gregory Colella ran 10.724 @ 130.64 for third position in the field in his convertible supercharged C5 Corvette. The next qualifier, Shawn Cavanagh, also a supercharged C5 Corvette, came in at 10.735 @ 125.88. Supercharging is a common way to get a car to run in the ten's and East Coast Supercharging co-owner Doug Ring was next in the field another one testing a customer's car with a 10.747 @ 74.28. The first turbocharged entry in the field was Russell DeLibero in his black C5 with a 10.844 @ 83.81. He was followed buy the newest supercharged entry in the seventh position, Paul Bogdan, with a 10.873 @ 127.84 in his silver C5. The eighth and final qualifying spot went to Marshall Brown who only got in one qualifying pass in his nitrous fed C5 with a 12.422 @ 91.81 mph. Tommy Michalkowski's 13.122 @ 75.21 was left on the outside looking in at the 8-car qualified field.

2011 Race 2 Ladder

Eliminations

On the way to the final Marshall Brown would take a first round win over defending 10.50 index Champion when he ran closer to the index with a 10.53 to Cavanagh's 10.633. Cavanagh had the tree advantage but Brown took the win light. In round two Brown would face off with Vincent Cupolo. This one ended right away as Cupolo rolled the car in a little too much and lit the red light with a -.024 giving Marshall the win. Brown went on to run 10.466 @ 126.39 on the free pass.

On the other side of the ladder, David Shen, with the number one qualifying position, would race Doug Ring in round one. This proved to be the closest race of the event. Shen was out with a .107 light to Ring's .125. Ring ran dead-on with a 10.502 @ 127.02 but it was not enough as Shen took the win by .0024 with a 10.518 @ 122.38. In round 2 Shen would face Paul Bogdan. This one was death by red as Bogdan went -.014 too early and Shen took the win. He ran 10.486 @ 126.03 on his free pass on the way to the final.

The stage was set and David Shen was in position to pick up some bonus points if he could pull off the event win from the pole position. They lined up with Shen in the left lane and Brown on the right. As they stage, Brown, a deep stager, rolled in a little too deep and when he got on the converter, the car crept forward and rolled through the beams fouling and giving Shen the win. One of the biggest risks for deep-stagers is having the car roll any little bit at all could lead to a foul like this. Shen then went on to make a full pass and ran a 10.489 @ 125.99 with the win light on the whole way.

Congratulations to Shen on the win and capturing the bonus points for the event.
