03/19/11 - Englishtown, NJ - We enjoyed the highest car count for the Cartek Performance Engineering Pro 10.50 Index today with 10 racers attempting to qualify for the 8-car field. Two racers were not going to be happy but it turned out to be two different from the ones that did not qualify. This is our first race of the season for which did not count for points as it is our annual Warm-up race.

Qualifying

At the end of the qualifying, Marshall Brown sat atop the class of 10 racers with a 10.518 pass at 113.13 mph. First time 10.50 racer, Vincent Cupolo, sat at the bottom in tenth spot with two passes under the index putting him at the bottom with his best being a 10.350 pass at 130.04 mph. He and David Shen were sitting on the outside looking as Shen qualified 9th with a 12.221 pass. Shawn Cavanagh, Stephen Wells, Gene Paterno, Russell DeLibero, Gregory Colella, Paul Bogdan and Adam Brandt all qualified inside the 8-car field and followed Brown's pole position. Shen and Cupolo got lucky breaks however as alternates when Greg Colella would not make the call for first round with tuning issues and Adam Brandt also did not make the call as he found a transmission fluid leak on the car and had to park for the day.

Eliminations

Cupolo took the first round win over 2010 Champion Shawn Cavanagh when Shawn left the starting line with a red light. Cupolo again failed to make the 10.50 mark running 10.495 but was still the victor with the red light by his opponent. He then went on to face David Shen and once again ran under his index. He was able to take the win with his sub 10.50 pass because Shen broke out by more. Cupolo was 10.463 @ 128 mph while Shen went 10.441 @ 121.87. In the final he was paired with Paul Bogdan who was sporting a newly supercharged combination. Cupolo survived a .222 reaction time and took the event win with his first positive pass of the day. He ran 10.538 @ 127.51 mph while Bogdan could not run the number going 10.691 @ 129.18.

Given the short time between now and the next race and the fact that I was not able to attend the race, we are going with the abridged version of the article. We hope to be back to full fledged articles and our regular author next week.

Awards and Payouts Today

  • Winner Vincent Cupolo earned a payout of $150 in addition to the winner trophy
  • Runner-up Paul Bogdan earned a payout of $100 in addition to the runner-up trophy
  • Number 1 Qualifier Marshall Brown received a plaque for his 10.518 @ 112.13 qualifying run
  • Paul Bogdan received the Best Reaction Time plaque for the best winning reaction time in the first round at .103

Next Two Races

The 2011 season opening warm-up race is in the books and we kick off our points Championship chase next week, March 26, 2011. There is no time to waste to start getting points. Will this be your season? Will anyone stop the "Mahopac Express" on his chase for yet another Championship? Remember. signing up for points is not mandatory but so much fun and leads to qualification for special races, prizes and of course, jackets for our top 16 finishes. You can sign up for points at the track but do so before first round of eliminations so that you get credit for the day. Doing it after will not get you retroactive points...sorry.

After next week's race we get a week off and then we pick up it up again for race number 3 of the season on Saturday, April 9, 2011. Visit www.corvettechallenge.info for more. You can discuss the series on the Drag Racing section of The Corvette Forum where you can find news, updates and polls.

Visit the Drag Schedule at www.racewaypark.com to view Raceway Park's schedule for other events and days for test and tuning.

As always, we couldn't enjoy our passion for racing without the tireless efforts of our coordinators - Edgar Perez, Bob Trieschmann and Dennis Kazimir. We'd be reduced to time shots only without our sponsors - many thanks for the continued support of our sponsors;
