07/24/10 - Englishtown, NJ - We had four racers come out today for the American Racing Headers Pro 8 Shootout 9.50 Index presented by Cartek Performance Engineering which included the season debut for Alfred "Sonnie" Pongonis. It was sweltering hot today but our four racers had no issues running their 9.50 index.

Qualifying

Taking the number one qualifying position with a pass of 9.566 @ 146.02 mph was David Harris with his supercharged purple flamed C5 Corvette. He was followed on the ladder by David Shen in the familiar 1967 C2 Corvette with a 9.665 @ 132.96 mph in the nitrous fed small block Red Corvette. Next was the new entry owned by Alfred "Sonnie" Pongonis. Sonnie's car has been in the making for about a year and made his Pro 8 Shootout 2010 debut with a 9.828 pass at 150.05 mph. His ride is a supercharged entry that is also a Convertible. The fourth and final qualified entry was Jay McCardle with his supercharged Blue C5 coupe.

2010 Race 6 Ladder

Round 1: Semi-Final

David Shen (2) would face Alfred Pongonis (3) in the first round of eliminations. Sonnie would go in the right lane with Shan going left. The drivers left the line with near identical reaction times with Pongonis' slightly better with .140 to .142 for Shen. Sonnie was able to take the win with a 9.931 on the brakes with a 122.34 mph as Shen struggled to run the number. Shen could only run 10.545 @ 121.94. I am betting he really wanted to be racing the 10.50 guys today. I am sure that group will welcome him if he ever chooses to. Our number 1 qualifier David Harris would get a competition single as his opponent, Jay McCardle (4) hurt the car in his prior pass and was not able to make it to the starting line. Harris took an easy 19-second cruise to the finish line to collect his winning time slip into the final.

Round 2: Final

Sonnie Pongonis was able to take his car to his first final in his first appearance of the season and he would face a fierce competitor in David Harris. The two supercharged cars, one built by Cartek and one by East Coast Supercharging we about to put on a great show. Sonnie raced out of the right lane and Dave went left. Again the lights on the .400 pro tree would by similar but this time Sonnie would be in the hole as Harris was out first with a .143 to .157 for him. Sonnie's 60' was better with 1.424 and began to reel in Harris. At the top end Harris would run the quicker elapsed time and took the win with a 9.593 @ 145.22 to Sonnie's 9.601 @ 145.05. The margin of victory for Harris was .0228. Harris not only got the win but also picks up a bonus for winning from the number one position. It is his second win of the season having won the first points race of the season.

2010 Points Standings

Despite a first round loss, David Shen was able to hold on to the points lead albeit by a smaller margin. His lead is now 22 points, or just a little over the value of one round which is worth 20 points. David Harris, with the win and the bonus for winning from the number 1 qualifying position, picked up 46 points on Shen today. Jay McCardle is third overall with 198 points and missed out on 20 points not being able to stage his car for first round. Angelo Valla remains in fourth place with 173 total attending just two races. Alfred Pongonis moves into the fifth position with his runner-up finish passing Mark Shaw (who's car and trailer are now for sale) and George Smith who has since sold his Corvette.
