Angelo Valla Scores The Win in Race 4

by Doug Bereczki

Qualifiers - American Racing Headers
Pro 8 Shootout presented by Cartek Performance Engineering
1  David Shen 9.517 0
2  Jay McCardle 9.613 0
3  Angelo Valla 9.658 0
4  Dave Harris 9.493 0
04/24/10 - Englishtown, NJ - Two race dates in a row that we get fantastic weather. For the 4th American Racing Headers Pro 8 Shootout 9.50 Index presented by Cartek Performance Engineering. we get 4 entries. 2010 regulars Angelo Valla, David Shen, Jay McCardle, and Dave Harris all made the show this week. And for the first time this year everybody was in their own car! Although Dave Harris almost had to borrow a car for this event. Dave was at E-town Friday night to make some Test & Tune passes. He didn't get very far, maybe 100'. His car grenaded its rear! The Title sponsor for the Corvette Challenge East Coast Supercharging sprung into action for Dave immediately. Doug Ring, who was on vacation, procured a new rear and by Saturday morning a new rear was being installed on the Vette. The ECS crew and Jay McCardle worked thru the night and morning to get Dave's car back on the track. Now if you have been following the Pro 8 Shootout, Doug and Jay are also competitors in this series! Isn't the Vette community great!

First out from under the Tower are Dave Harris and Jay. Both tear down the track a little faster than 9.50. Next out is Angelo. His concentration must have faltered because he left before the tree activated. David Shen was absent for the first round of qualifying. He was back in the pits plugging his slick. As he was adjusting the air in his slicks he heard that all too familiar hissing sound. This marks the third time he gets a hole in his slicks this year! So after one round of qualifying no one is on the right side of 9.50. In round two of qualifying David Shen snags the #1 spot with a 9.517 run, Jay picks up the #2 spot with a 9.613, Angelo grabs the 3rd spot with a 9.658 run, and Dave Harris just misses the top spot by .007. Dave brings up the rear at 9.493.

2010 Race 4 Ladder

Round 1: Semi-Final

Round 1 is actually the semi-final round this week. Dave Harris (4) and David Shen (1) are the first to go at it. The yellows flash and Dave Harris gets the starting line advantage. David Shen takes off with a little wiggle but gets straightened out quickly and proceeds to drive around Dave to take the stripe with a 9.554 @ 136 mph to Dave's 9.655 @ 117 mph. The second pair is Angelo Valla (3) and Jay McCardle (2). Both blue Vettes shoot down the track nice and straight. Angelo gets a hole shot win with a 9.610 time at 124.00 mph. Jay was unable to reproduce his qualifying time as he crosses the stripe at 9.676 and 141.06 mph. Another first for this year is that we finally got to see some real races in the first round!

Round 2: Final

This final is a rematch of race #2 pitting David Shen (1) against Angelo Valla (3). Both drivers cut a green light. Angelo is out first as David follows .036 behind. Both vintage Vettes hurtle down the track door handle to door handle. Angelo edges ahead of David at the line and takes the win. Angelo's time of 9.572 @ 132.62 mph was enough to get it done. David could not match his qualifying time as he crossed the stripe at 9.600 @ 137.15 mph. Two times to the final round for Angelo equals two wins. On the other hand David has made all three finals and came up short all three times. Race #4 is in the record books with David Shen retaining the lead with 212 pts. Dave Harris retains 2nd place but falls back by 22 pts. with 190 pts. And even though Angelo Valla has two wins he is still in third with 173 pts. Jay McCardle picks up 37 more points to keep the fourth spot with 127 pts. Mark Shaw and Doug Ring round out the field at the 5th and 6th spots respectively. And that's it for over a month as we don't race next until June 5th.

Awards and Payouts Today

  • Winner Angelo Valla earned a payout of $150 cash and a trophy
  • Runner-up David Shen earned a payout of $100 cash and a trophy
  • Number 1 Qualifier David Shen received a plaque for his 9.510 @ 138.10 qualifying run
  • Angelo Valla received the Best Reaction Time plaque for the best winning reaction time in the first round at 0.172

2010 Points Standings

Dave Shen and David Harris swapped positions in the point standings with Shen taking the number 1 spot thanks to his semi-final appearance. Shen's 212 lease Harris' 190 by just over round (20 points per round) and looks like these two could swap positions every race this year and looks to be very exciting. Then next three in our top five all held the positions they came in with. Angelo Valla's win brings him to 173 total points in the 3rd followed by Jay McCardle in fourth with 127. Our fifth place race, Mark Shaw, was not able to make the race and thus had no change in his 50 point total. Word has it Sonnie Pongonis is very close to being ready for the next race and is very capable of running the index. See ya soon.

As always, we couldn't enjoy our passion for racing without the tireless efforts of our coordinators - Edgar Perez, Bob Trieschmann and Dennis Kazimir. We'd be reduced to time shots only without our sponsors - many thanks for the continued support of our sponsors;
