04/03/10 - Englishtown, NJ - 4/3/2010 - Englishtown, NJ - Finally, we get a nice day to go racing. Once again this week we get 5 entries in the third race of the American Racing Headers Pro 8 Shootout 9.50 Index presented by Cartek Performance Engineering. Dave Harris, Jay McCardle, Doug Ring, David Shen, and Mark Shaw were all at the track ready to attack the mile. Last week's winner and points leader, Angelo Valla did not make the show. Angelo traveled down to Cecil County Dragway to run in an 8.50 index race and did pretty well, made it to the final round. Jay got his car back together and was looking to be a little more competitive than 12 seconds! So far this year Mike Moran's white C5 has made both points races as Doug Ring piloted Mike's Vette in the race. Last week Jay used Mike's car to get points. Doug's Vette is still in the construction phase. Doug has been putting all of his customer's projects first ahead of his own project. Doug mentioned that keeping his customers happy is his #1 priority!

Qualifying

Once again there would be a wide range of qualifying times this week. David Shen and Jay McCardle had their Vettes' dialed in pretty close from the start with 9.554 and 9.581 times accordingly. Mark Shaw is about a half second off as he posts a 10.053 qualifying time. Doug Ring would ease the "rental Vette" down the track at a comfortable 13.431. Surprisingly he is not on the bottom of the ladder after the first qualifying round. Dave Harris occupies that spot with his, under the index, 9.387 pass.

Round two of qualifying gets everybody on the correct side of 9.50. David Shen improves his time to 9.538 @ 138 mph and retains the top spot. Dave Harris adjusted his car properly and snags the #2 spot with his run of 9.550 @ 139.57 mph. Jay McCardle was unable to better his round one time as his Vette threw the super charger belt. His first round time of 9.581 @ 108.46 mph puts him in the third spot. Mark Shaw's Vette had a transmission failure during his second pass. That would leave him with his first round time of 10.053 @ 144.52 mph and the 4th position on the ladder. Doug Ring would round out the field in the 5th spot.

2010 Race 3 Ladder

Round 1:

First out from underneath the tower are Dave Harris (2) and Doug Ring (5). Both drivers leave with green lights and produce VERY different results. Dave rockets down to just beyond track and shuts down and crosses the stripe first at 10.114 @ 89.62 mph. Doug on the other hand is out for an Easter Sunday drive with his pass of 18.166 @ 74.84 mph. Jay was able to get 12.362 out of that car last week; I'm just saying! Next up is Jay McCardle (3) and Mark Shaw (4). At this point Jay is pulling up to the line just to get staging points as he was unable to get another belt on his Vette. Luck would be on Jay's side because Mark was a no show at the line. So Jay would also get a round 1 win with his all motor pass of 17.213 @ 78.03mph. David Shen (1) gets the bye run and uses it to dial his Vette in a little tighter with a 9.526 pass at 138.03 mph.

Round 2: Semi-Final

Jay McCardle (3) pulls up to the line hoping that his opponent might light the red bulb. He is paired up against David Shen (1) and his '65 Vette which is running smoothly up to this point. The yellow's flash and both lights are green. David races down the mile at 9.682 @ 121.98 mph for the win over Jay. Just the same as last round Jay does not push his wounded Vette and eases down the track at 14.941 @ 92.86 mph. This time Dave Harris (2) would get the bye run. Dave uses this run to get a little practice on the tree. It works too! He cuts a .091 light, best light of the day in the 9.50 class. Dave immediately shuts the car down and just cruises to the stripe. And that wraps up rounds 1 and 2. So we go to the final round with no real racing yet.

Round 3: Final

By the time the final round is called the air has deteriorated a bit. At the start of racing the day was cool and sunny. By the time Dave Harris (2) and David Shen (1) do their burn-outs the DA had raised about 1200' and the sky became overcast slightly. Both stage lights are lit on both sides of the track. The yellows flash and they're off! Shen gets a slight .003 advantage off the line, .135 to .138. The Dave's are fender-to-fender all the way down the track. No traction issues or car problems, this IS A RACE! The Black '03 Supercharged Vette of Dave Harris just edges across the stripe first ahead of Davis Shen's '65 Red Vette by .059!!! Dave Harris wins the final round with a 9.551 @ 133.95 to David Shen's 9.613 @ 137.85.

2010 Points Standings

That wraps up Race three of the Pro 9.50 index. Didn't get exciting till the final round. But the wait was worth it because that was a great race. With that win David Harris picks up the top spot in the class with 155 pts by ONE point over David Shen with 154 pts. Angelo Valla falls to third with his 97 pts from last week. Jay McCardle moves up a spot to 4th with 90 pts and Mark Shaw falls to 5th with 50 pts. Doug Ring rounds out the leader board with 34 pts. David Shen softens the runner-up spot in the Final a bit by getting the extra points for the # 1 qualifying time of 9.538.

Next Two Races

The 3rd points race out of ten is scheduled for April 24th. Hopefully that will give Doug some time to get his car ready. And maybe that will give Mark time to sort out his problems. Will that be enough time to get the other players out? Will Chris Young back-up his smack talk before the season started? I guess we will have to wait till the 24th! Please keep an eye out on our home page, www.corvettechallenge.info and the , the Drag Racing section of The Corvette Forum and your email for news, updates and polls.

As always, we couldn't enjoy our passion for racing without the tireless efforts of our coordinators - Edgar Perez, Bob Trieschmann and Dennis Kazimir. We'd be reduced to time shots only without our sponsors - many thanks for the continued support of
