by Doug Bereczki

2  Angelo Valla 9.613 124.89

03/27/10 - Englishtown, NJ - Holy Cow! The weather for race # two of the American Racing Headers Pro 8 Shootout 9.50 Index presented by Cartek Performance Engineering felt like you should be putting your cars away for the Winter! By the time Raceway Park opened the staging lanes the temperature was 36*! Fortunately for the Pro 8 racers the track had warmed up considerably by the time the first round of qualifying was called.

The first two cars out of the gate were Angelo Valla in his 1972 Vette sporting a beautiful paint job and newly licensed Dave Harris in his Black 2003 Vette. Valla rips of a 9.199 pass while Dave posts up a 9.521! Next up are Mark Shaw and David Shen. Both drivers go to the bottom of the ladder running under the index with Mark running a 9.387 and David at 9.491. There didn't seem to be any traction issues in spite of the cold temps. The last driver out was Jay McCardle in his blue………. no wait a white C5?! Jay's Vette was not completely finished from getting its new engine. Unlike the previous passes, Jay spun his way thru 60' on his way to a 14.081 ¼ mile pass. Second round of qualifying finds all the drivers who ran under the index in round one posting up qualifying times on the right side of the index. Angelo shoots down the track running a 9.613 @ 124.89 mph, David Shen gets in with a 9.820 @ 134.62 mph, and Mark qualifies with a 9.827 @ 145.11 mph. Neither Dave Harris nor Jay improved their initial times from the first qualifier. So now the ladder is set with the new guy Dave Harris taking the top spot with his round 1 time of 9.521 @ 143.38 mph! Followed by Angelo @ 9.613, David @ 9.820, Mark @ 9.827, and Jay @ 14.081.

One other driver with a pretty quick Vette was also at the track but not running in the class. Michael Conway with his bronze C4 Vette was making some shakedown passes. He recently put in a new transmission and wanted to get everything seated properly and did not want to test in the class. He will be running in Raceway Park's Friday Night 8.50 index class. Supporting Mike was Wayne Keegan, 2008 Pro 10.0 Champ. Mike plans on running a Pro 9.50 event at some point this season to support the Pro 8 class.

2010 Race 2 Ladder

Round 1:

Mark Shaw (4) and David Shen (3) are paired once again. Mark stages his 555 big block 1970 Red Vette and David lines up with his 383 powered '65 Corvette. The yellows flash and David is off with a .135 light while Mark appears to wait for the green light with a RT of .490. I was pretty much over at that point. Mark tried to run David down with a 9.551 @149.35 mph as David crossed the stripe first with a 9.658 at 126.53 mph. Mark's rational for the light is "the fact that Ben and I were at the Bon Jovi concert at Mohegan Sun until 12:00 am the night before and I never slept". Next up is Dave Harris (1) with the bye run on the uneven ladder. He cuts a respectable .125 light on his way to a 9.848 run at 138.64 mph. Angelo Valla (2) pretty much gets a bye run as he is paired up with Jay McCardle (5). Jay is in a borrowed Vette running to get tech., staging, and qualifying points and first round points if his opponent doesn't show or red lights. However, Jay did not bring the car to the line to get those stage points. Angelo shows up, doesn't red light, and takes the win with a conservative pass of 10.956 @ 85.06.

Round 2: Semi-Final

The Dave's are paired up. Dave Harris (1) gets off the line first with a .132 light. David Shen (3) follows with a .147 RT and passes Harris and gets to the stripe first with a 9.643 @ 127.52 mph pass. Harris trailed at 9.848 and 137.57 mph. This time Angelo Valla (2) gets a bye on the ladder and goes to the Final round.

Round 3: Final

The temperature got up to 45* with the sun out, but by the time Angelo and David stage for the final round the temperature was on the way back down and the sky became overcast. Angelo gets out of the gate first with a .074 light as David follows a little later with a .142 light. The race quickly becomes a peddle fest with both drivers getting off and on the throttle several times as BOTH cars get out of shape on the colder track! Neither driver wanted to give up the race and Angelo got straightened out first and takes the win over David.

The first points race of 10 (for the first time this year) is in the books with Angelo Valla taking the win and David Shen with the runner up spot. Dave Harris picks up the points for the #1 qualifying time. Hopefully race #3 which is 1 week away will bring better weather!
