David Shen Opens Season with Pro 8 Shootout Win

by Doug Bereczki

03/20/10 - Englishtown, NJ - One of the snowiest Winters in recent memory is finally over. The third weekend of March allowed most of us to finally get our cars to the track. Five of the eight drivers who are signed up for the American Racing Headers Pro 8 Shootout 9.50 Index presented by Cartek Performance Engineering made it to the track on Saturday. But only three had their Vettes with them! This is an exciting new time for the Pro 8 Shootout as this year the class is set at an Index of 9.50 instead of last year's 8.50. The new index opens up the class for some of our 10.0 drivers to speed up and some of our drivers who have kept away from the class that had gotten to quick for them. Additional the series is now a 10-date points series up from five. Today's race was a non-points warm-up race. We hope the new structure leads to full fields of eight most of the points races for the season. The class name will remain Pro 8 Shootout as originally named signifying a "Pro" tree and "8" signifying an 8 car field.

2010 Race 1 Ladder

Dave Harris had his sharp looking 03 Vette with him, but was not running in the class. After his Vette spent some quality time at ECS this winter getting a full roll cage, he was at the track making his licensing passes. Doug Ring was there supporting him. After making 6 passes to prove he can drive in the 9's and getting the necessary signatures from two licensed drivers, David Shen and Mark Shaw, Dave became a legal 9-seconcd racer! Next week you will definitely see Dave running in the class.

Chris Young made an appearance at the track. But the "Blueberry" Corvette was nowhere to be seen. When asked where his 93 Vette was he replied that it was home "resting". Hopefully, the both of them will be at the track next week.

Qualifying

So that only leaves Mark Shaw and David Shen to race for the day. They got to have their own personal grudge match. For the first qualifying pass David lines up in the left lane and Mark in the right lane. The yellows flash and they're off on the first pass of the season. Dave runs a 9.570 @ 137.54 to Mark's 9.684 @ 145 93. The second qualifying pass was almost a mirror image of the first. In opposite lanes Mark qualifies at #2 with his 9.669 run while Dave retains the #1 spot with his 9.588 run.

Round 1: The Final

That now brings us to round 1 which is also the final round! Dave stages his 65 Red Vette in the left lane and Mark pilots his 1970 red Vette up to the line in the right lane. As the lights go green Mark spots David .079 on the tree. Mark catches David at about track and rockets across the stripe first. Unfortunately in running David down Mark runs under the 9.50 index with a 9.319 @137.57. David captures the win with a 9.595 run at 137.33 mph.

With the times that these two guys ran and Dave Harris's best time of 9.77 it looks like the competition will be very tight this year. Also with 8 drivers signed up for points it would appear that there will be a full field for each race. Should be an exciting season.

Awards and Payouts Today

  • Winner David Shen earned a payout of $150 cash and a trophy
  • Runner-up Mark Shaw earned a payout of $100 cash and a trophy
  • Number 1 Qualifier David Shen received a plaque for his 9.588 @ 137.65 qualifying run
  • David Shen received the Best Reaction Time plaque for the best winning reaction time in the first round at 0.138

2010 Points Standings

The warm-up race is in the books and now the drivers that have entered the points chase will be doing just that next week and for the following 10 races. It is not too late to join the points chase so be sure and sign up at the track before the first round of eliminations at your next race.
