06/05/10 - Englishtown, NJ - Today Anger Management Racing Pro 11.50 Index race had to be the hottest even in the history of this series. Weather stations were melting, cars were running their slowest elapsed times (ET) ever and the racers were trying to find shade. With the hot weather and high humidity, we were one vehicle short of a full field. Of all the Corvette's at today's race, only one had mechanical problems. Shay was not able stage for first round due to an over heating problem just out of the burnout box.

Round 1

The first driver to start Event 6 was Tommy Michalkowski (1) who would have a bye run thanks to his number 1 qualifying position. Tommy went out first to give him time to cool down for the other class he was running, the 10.50 Index. I don't think there would be enough time to cool down any car on a day like today. Tommy did not push his Vette to the limit on his single pass. Tommy crossed the finish line with an 11.843 @ 93.29 mph. The first pair of Corvettes to race was Ellis Gray (3) and Marc Hinkes (10). Both drivers are staged deep and the tree flashed, Ellis was out with a .060 to Marc's .130. Marc did his best to push Ellis out but came up a little short. Ellis crossed with an 11.676 @ 115.28 mph to Marc's 11.814 @ 117.52 mph. The next pair to the line was our points leader Eric Fischer (2) racing against Rich Shuleski (9). Rich left at the flash of the tree and he was .017 to Eric's unusually late .097. Another race where the sleepy driver did his best to push out the quick responding driver. Eric was able to catch Rich, but it was not enough to advance him to round two. Rich crossed first with an 11.652 @ 118.69 mph to Eric's 11.618 @ 115.06 mph. With a significant lead in the points, Fischer would not be hurt too bad by the first round exit, his first of the season having been to every prior today.

The next pair turned out to be a comp single. Shay LaScalla (7) was not able to make it to the starting due to overheating the car just after the burnout. This gave Ron Higgins (14) a free pass to round two. Ron crossed the beams at 12.433 @ 107.38 mph. We are now halfway through round one. Starting the second half was Anthony Cupolo (6) taking on Peter Huff (13). The tree flashed and Peter was out first. One small problem; Peter put on the red light. Peter was -.013 red to Anthony's .200. Anthony made this into a time shot and crossed the finish line at 11.560 @116.15 mph. Peter has been trying to find his spot on the tree. He has been adjusting the front tire pressure, launch RPM's and bumping in on the second stage light. It is a matter of time to before he will be consistently double zeros on the tree. The next pair to battle it out on a hot July day was Gary Hillen (8) and Gary Hurta (15). Both drivers are staged and ready to go. Gary Hillen was out first but Gary Hurta was still sitting at the starting line. Unknown to what happened but Gary Hillen was .143 on the tree to Gary Hurta's 1.232. Gary Hillen crossed the finish line with a 13.020 @ 115.59 mph. The next Corvette to the line is a familiar vehicle. How can you not know who it is. It is known as the Easter Egg driven by Rob Farley (4) going up against Andrew Volponi (11). Both drivers are staged deep and sitting on the edge of their seats waiting for a flash. The tree flashed, Rob is out first with a .065 to Andrew's .148. This has to be the worst reaction time that I have ever seen by Andrew. I have seen Andrew be in the teens all day. Rob was able to cross first with an 11.708 @ 89.98 mph to Andrew's 11.862 @ 117.68 mph. The last pair to close up round one was Ralph Savarese (5) and Jerry Muniz (12). The tree flashed and Ralph was out first with a .071 to Jerry's .108. On the top end Jerry was not able to run down Ralph. Ralph crossed first with an 11.787 @ 86.41 mph to Jerry's 12.372 @ 103.86 mph.

2010 Race 6 Ladder

Round 2

The first pair to start round two where Anthony Cupolo (6) and Rich Shuleski (9). Both drivers are staged and Rich left first. Rich left very early. Rich was -.436 Red to Anthony's .071. Anthony crossed the finish line with an 11.502 @ 116.33 mph. The next pair to battle it out on the 1320 was Ellis Gray (3) and Ron Higgins (14). Ron left first with a .162 to Ellis's .242. On the top end Ron was not able to run the number. Ron crossed the finish line at 12.367 @ 109.50 mph to Ellis's winning 12.039 @ 105.38 mph. The next two drivers to take on the 1320 were Rob Farley (4) and Gary Hillen (8). Gary left before the tree was activated giving Rob a free pass to the semi finals. Rob went 11.455 @ 119.70 mph. The last two drivers to complete round two were Ralph Savarese (5) and Tommy Michalkowski (1). Ralph hit the tree hard with a .065 to Tommy's .131. Tommy tried to push out Ralph but Tommy broke out trying. Ralph ran an 11.555 @116.19 mph to Tommy's 11.482 @ 118.07.

Round 3:

The first pair to start round three was Anthony Cupolo (6) and Rob Farley (4). Off the line first was Anthony with a .051 to Rob's .068. On the top end Anthony crossed first with an 11.503 @ 117.28 mph to Rob's 11.514 @ 119.59 mph. The last pair to complete the semi finals (round 3) was Ralph Savarese (5) and Ellis Gray (3). With near identical reaction times, Ellis had the starting line advantage by .006. Ellis left first with a .033 to Ralphs .039. Ralph crossed first with an 11.501 @ 112.53 mph to Ellis's loosing 11.514 @ 120.72 mph.

Round 4: Final Round

The final had Mahopac, NY verse Massapequa Park, NY. Where were Jay-Z and Alicia Keys to sing New York State of Mind? It was "The Mahopac Express" Ralph Savarese (5) f going up against Anthony Cupolo (6) from "Massapequa Park Kid". Reaction time advantage went to Ralph, Ralph gave up the stripe on the top end with both drivers playing the top end game. Anthony crossed first with an 11.468 @116.74 mph to Ralph's 11.453 @ 114.46 mph. This was a great final. This was a top end race with both drivers battling it out to the finish line. Congrats to all the drivers for making it through a very hot day. Hope to see everyone on 8-14-2010.

Of special note is that Anthony's uncle, Vincent Cupolo joined him in the winner's circle today taking the win in the Corvette Challenge (bracket) class. Also Anthony just came off of a semi-final finish at the Super Chevy show on the prior weekend. The kid is on a hot streak to say the least and dad Tony Cupolo is proud to see the car running the index and the youngster getting the round wins.

2010 Points Standings

After five finals in a row, point leader Eric Fischer suffered his first early exit losing in round 1. This, however, did not hinder his points lead as he still leads the pack with 470 total points. Ellis Gray managed to close some on the leader with his semi-final appearance. Gray remains in second in the chase with 339 total points. Rob Farley remains in third also gaining ground with his semi-final finish and is there with 315 points thus far. Cupolo's win leapfrogged him to the fourth spot in the standings. He came into the event in 11th position so this is a dramatic jump for him. He holds the spot with 263 points. Tommy Michalkowski came in sixth and now holds the fifth position for the season with 247 points. Falling out of the top 5 today were Jerry Muniz and Marc Hinkes who are close behind Tommy with 246 and 235 points respectively.
