10/16/10 - Englishtown, NJ - The weather was nice, even a little cool in the early morning hours, but for the most part it was a sunny day. This was our ninth race of the season and the eighth point's race of the season in the Cartek Pro 10.50 Index.

This week the number of Cartek Performance & Engineering sponsored 10.50 racers, presented by J & M Motorsports was 8, tying the season high and the second time we had a full field. Qualifying had a hiccup or two and by the end, 3 racers were not on the correct side of the Index.

Edgar Perez and the Red Sled, with his NA 427 built by the Vette Doctors would not run in the first round of qualifying. Marshal Brown would also not make the first round of qualifying with his N2O sniffing, 04 Black 383 stroker powered C5. Rob Zona and his Black 388 all motor 03 ZO6 would run under with a 9.842 @ 144.27. Tommy Michalkowski, in his APS twin turbocharged, Silver, automatic, C5, built by Anger Management Racing, would run 9.942 @ 116.96. Russ DeLibero in his Black 02 ZO6, sporting a rear mount turbo ran 10.413 @120.81. Marc Scharago with his Black Convertible C5 with a 402 and Paxton supercharger under the hood ran 13.895 @ 61.59. Stephen Wells, driving his Electron Blue ZO6, racing NA with his Nitrous equipped 427 built by Cartek Performance & Engineering, would run a 10.558 @ 131.00. Shawn Cavanagh and his Paxton supercharged, automatic, Spiral Grey C5 built by East Coast Supercharging ran a 10.551 @ 129.74.

In the second round of qualifying, Zona, would improve to a 10.008 @ 145.41 bringing him in at #8. Michalkowski would improve to a 10.400 @ 103.17 making him #7. DeLibero would have mechanical issues with his car and not make the 2nd qualifier making him #6 with his 10.413. Brown would run a conservative 12.573 @ 120.48 placing him at #5. Scharago would improve to a 10.801 @ 131.90 bringing him in at #4. Perez's only time shot yielded him the #3 position with a 10.605 @ 128.97. Cavanagh would not improve on his 10.551 placing him at #2. Wells would improve to a 10.514 @ 130.47 to secure the #1 qualifying position. This was the fourth time in eight points races Wells has held the number 1 spot. Except for the one race Wells had to borrow a slower car, he has qualified no lower than third all season.

Round 1

The first pair would be Michalkowski (7) vs. Perez (3). Michalkowski would tree Perez, .111 vs. .265. This gave Michalkowski the starting line advantage and the win with a 10.669 @ 108.61 to Perez's 10.551 @ 129.75. The second pair was Zona (8) vs. Scharago (4). Scharago had Zona at the tree .276 vs. .469, but ran into problems running 24.220 @ 29.59. Zona would win with a 10.565 @133.83. The third pair would be Brown (5) vs. Wells (1). Wells had the advantage at the light .156 to .198, but his car wouldn't rev past 5000 rpm and he couldn't hit the Index running a lowly 10.901 @ 128.96, the winner, Brown, made his best pass of the weekend with a 10.608 @ 127.90. The fourth "pair" would be Cavanagh (2) who was laddered with DeLibero (6). DeLibero hurt the car in the first round of qualifying and didn't make the call for round one, handing Cavanagh the win. Cavanagh ran 10.446 @ 132.26 with a reaction time of .104.

Round 2 - Semi-Final

The first pair would be Cavanagh vs. Zona. Cavanagh would cut a killer .004 light to Zona's sleepy .201, but Cavanagh didn't need it. Zona was at the track testing and ran it out to a 9.708 on the brakes @ 127.10 mph. Cavanagh put together a good package as he ran a 10.529 @ 135.10. The second pair in round two would be Michalkowski vs. Brown. Michalkowski ran a 10.865 @ 124.49 with a .143 light. Brown slowed to a 10.819 @ 126.77 with a reaction time of .199.

Round 3 - Final

It was Michalkowski vs. Cavanagh, both racers familiar with final round wins. The points are tighter than ever in this class, so the pressure was on both drivers. However, Michalkowski won the battle at the starting line and the stripe, as he took the win with a .059 light, running 10.568 @ 115.08 nosing the points leader. Cavanagh ran a good race going 10.550 @ 121.53 with a .098 reaction time. You can see by the MPH of these nine second cars that there was a braking dual at the stripe. This is good racing folks!

Congratulations to Tommy Michalkowski for the Win!

Congratulations to Shawn Cavanagh for stretching out his Points Lead.

Congratulations to Shawn Cavanagh for earning the Best Winning Reaction Time award.

Congratulations to Stephen Wells for Qualifying #1.

See you all on October 30th.

Rumor Mill: Rumors are true! Edgar Perez did in fact show up to race #9 with new shoes on the Red Sled. He abandoned his MT Drag Radials for MT ET Streets. (It doesn't look like it helped though) The rumor for the next race? It appears that the racers are coming out for the cooler weather. We are hoping that a few more will come out on October 30th , this way we can have a genuine Bump Spot!

You read it here first!

APB: With Wells and Perez going out the first round, go back and read the APB from the last race . Can you say wrong moves?

2010 Points Standings

The class has enjoyed a very tight points chase all year but after today's race, we are seeing some separation. Point leader and race runner-up Shawn Cavanagh continues to lead the class with 539 points. Race winner Tommy Michalkowski moves to second from fourth and trails by 24 with a total of 437. For most of the year the top 3 racers were separated by less than a round. Now the leader leads by a little over a round but has placed some distance over third place driver Steve Wells and fourth place driver Edgar Perez. With both going out round 1 today, they find themselves in difficult positions with just two races left. Wells, with 475 total, finds himself out of first by 64. While he still can capture first within a race, it is not looking as good as in races past. Perez, (464), finds himself in a more difficult position trailing first by 75 points and three racers. Of course this could all flip if Cavanagh and Michalkowski go out round 1 and Perez defeats Wells in the final at the next race. If this is the case, we could see four drivers within a round for the final race of the season. Consider yourselves jinxed! Rob Zona rounds out the top 5 in the class with 321 points total for the season.

Next Two Races

Our next two races come almost on top of each other. We are back in action on Saturday, October 30, 2010 and then the following weekend on Saturday, November 6, 2010. These will be our last two points races of the season and with the Bracket Championship owned by King Ralph, we will be looking at the battles for the Championships in our three index classes. That is not to say our bracket racers have nothing to race for as they will be jockeying for position in the Top 16 spots that will be invited to participate in our season ending Top 16 Gamblers Invitational race to be held on November 13, 2010. For more information about the schedule visit You can discuss the series on , the Drag Racing section of The Corvette Forum where you can find news, updates and polls.

Visit the Drag Schedule at to view Raceway Park's schedule for other events and days for test and tuning.

As always, we couldn't enjoy our passion for racing without the tireless efforts of our coordinators - Edgar Perez, Bob Trieschmann and Dennis Kazimir. We'd be reduced to time shots only without our sponsors - many thanks for the continued support of our sponsors;
