07/24/10 - Englishtown, NJ - We thought the weather was brutal at the last race 06/05/10 and that those would probably be the worst weather conditions we would see all season. Well, that just wasn't the case! The weather was even more brutal for this race. The news was predicting 100 degrees with a real feel of up to 112 degrees in some places! The DA was above 4000 feet according to many personal weather stations. (I stop checking after it hits 4000 feet) As you would suspect, everyone's Performance was off for our sixth race of the season. This was the fifth points race of the season in the Cartek Pro 10.50 Index.

This week the number of Cartek Performance & Engineering sponsored 10.50 racers, presented by J & M Motorsports was 7, the same as the last race. The qualifying went smoothly. Everyone was on the correct side of the index by the end of the second round of qualifying.

The winner from the last race, Russ DeLibero showed up in his black, C5 ZO6, converted to an automatic, with a rear mount turbo. Russ would run a 10.805 @ 118.36 mph. Shawn Cavanagh had his Paxton supercharged, automatic, spiral grey C5 built by East Coast Supercharging ran a 10.942 @ 127.52. Tommy Michalkowski, in his APS twin turbocharged, silver, automatic, C5, built by Anger Management Racing, would run under with a 10.476 @ 124.36 mph. Stephen Wells, driving his electron blue ZO6, racing NA with his Nitrous equipped 427 built by Cartek Performance & Engineering, would run under with a 10.467 @ 129.78. Edgar Perez and the Red Sled, with his NA 427 built by the Vette Doctors would run under the index at 10.438 @ 126.44 mph. Marc Scharago and the sleek, black, wide body convertible with his blown 402 also ran under with a 10.204 at 136.17 mph. Rob Zona showed up with Gary Hillen's black C6 ZO6, as his NA C5 ZO6 was still being upgraded. He would not run in the first round of qualifying.

In the second round of qualifying, Zona would get assigned an 11.500 because Gary's car does not have a roll bar, relegating him to #7. Michalkowski would improve to an 11.380 @ 130.14 coming in at # 6. Scharago would slow it down to 11.141 @ 126.38 coming in at #5. DeLibero would not improve on his 10.805 @ 118.36 mph and come in at #4. Cavanagh would improve to a 10.792 @ 132.71 mph and qualify #3. Wells would improve to a 10.596 @ 129.49 coming in at #2. Perez also improved and ran a 10.594 @ 123.38, just edging Wells by a mere .002 to take the #1 qualifying position. (Edgar how does that dance go again?)

Round 1

The first pair would be Michalkowski (6) vs. Cavanagh (3). Cavanagh had a slight advantage at the light .094 to .101, but ran under with a 10.403 @ 126.65, handing the win to Michalkowski who ran 10.552 133.46. The second pairing would be Wells (2) vs. Scharago (5). Wells caught Scharago sleeping at the tree .140 to .885. Scharago ran a 10.198 @ 123.73 trying to run Wells down who was braking to a 10.701 @ 111.47. The third pair would be DeLibero (4) vs. Zona (7). Zona would cut a killer .007 light against DeLibero's .119 but it was all for nothing as Zona could not run the index going 12.298 @ 88.57 to DeLibero's 11.092 @109.01. The final car in the first round was Perez (1) who was dialed in harder than ever, running a single and posting a 10.518 @125.69.

2010 Race 6 Ladder

Round 2 - Semi-Final

The first pair in round two would be Perez vs. Michalkowski, NA vs. Turbo, both cars being C5 automatics. Michalkowski got out first with a .243 to Perez's .286 light, but could not run the number posting a 10.706 @ 133.41. Perez won with a 10.511 @ 126.07, the closest run to the index all day.

The second pair would be Wells vs. DeLibero. Both cars 2002 C5 ZO6's, both cars converted to automatics, both cars capable of running the number. This would end up being payback for Wells as the two paired up in round 2 at the last race and DeLibero won by .005. Wells would cut a .109 to DeLibero's .134, then Wells took the stripe from DeLibero on the brakes with a 10.682 @ 122.01 to DeLibero's hard charging 10.769 @ 142.90 which was high mph of the event.

Round 3 - Final

This final round was particularly climactic. It was the Blue Bullet being wheeled by 10.5 rookie driver Stephen Wells vs. the Red Sled with veteran index racer Edgar Perez. These two racers have been looking to race each other in eliminations for years. On this day they would meet, in the Final Round of all places. Perez, attempting to claw his way to the top of the points standings and Wells trying to get back to #1 and not let Perez catch up to the rest of the top points holders. The race was almost over a quickly as it started, when Wells took a starting line advantage of .131 to Perez's .331. Both drivers spun on the hot and deteriorating starting line, but Perez spun worse and was unable to run the number. Wells took the stripe on the brakes with a 10.707 @ 120.00 to Perez's 10.792 @ 125.35.

Wells becomes the first 10.50 Index racer with a repeat win this season in our points chase. He won the first points race of the season.

Congratulations to Stephen Wells for the Win!
Congratulations to Stephen Wells for re-taking the Points Lead.

Rumor Mill:

We are hearing that Mike Calicchia is close to making a return to the 10.50 index and if all the racers that have raced this year show up, we could soon be seeing a bump spot for the 8-car qualified field. To date we have yet to have a racer bumped from the field. Caution: When we start to see more than 8 cars, drivers will have to be on their game during the qualifying as well. Hey Mike, BRING IT!

With the win today Steve Wells moves to the top of the points standings with a total of 348 points. Tommy Michalkowski remains in second place but now trails by nearly 2 rounds at 34 points with a total of 314. Edgar Perez was able to move up to the forth spot with his second runner-up finish in a row now has 254 points. The move puts Rob Zona in fifth place with 234. This was Rob's second race in a row without his Corvette but should have it back for the next race.

Racers and fans alike take note at the end of the next race, August 14th, Raceway Park will invite the top 2 drivers in the class to the 30th Annual PC Richard & Son All American Jet Car Nationals on Wednesday August 18th. The two drivers will compete for cash, trophies and bragging rights. From the looks of it, three drivers have a really good shot at being able to represent the class at the show in front of thousands of fans and get to attend the show afterward too. Good luck to all.

If you would like to attend the event you can purchase tickets from Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.
