Shawn Cavanagh 2010 Season Opener of the 10.50 Index

by Steve Wells

03/20/10 - Englishtown, NJ - After the floods receded from the weekend before, the sun rose from the horizon like the Phoenix. The Corvette Challenge warm-up was comfortably warm, with the sun shining brightly down on the 1320 of Raceway Park. The sun shown so intensely on the asphalt that the water boiled up through the tent holes in the pits, yet the temperature was only in the mid seventies. Beautiful racing weather, but record times were not to be had, as the Barometer was low hovering around 29.9's.

There are nearly 10 racers prepared to sign up for the Cartek Performance Engineering Pro 10.50 Index presented by J & M Motorsports points but merely three racers showed up to dial in there Corvettes, preparing for the 2010 racing season. This year the racing should be tight, with ten exciting points races scheduled, a first for any of the CC Index classes. The three racers in attendance were all capable of running the number with plenty to spare. First we had Steve Wells in his newly acquired Electron Blue 02 ZO6, sporting a naturally aspirated 427 built by 10.5 title sponsor Cartek Performance & Engineering. Second we had Shawn Cavanagh and his Spiral Grey 03 Coupe, powered by a stock short block force fed by a Paxton Novi centrifugal supercharger. His car being built by Corvette Challenge title sponsor East Coast Supercharging. The third and final contestant was Rob Zona in his black 03 ZO6 with the rear wheels being driven by a unique naturally aspirated 388 cubic inch LS engine. This car being built by Anger Management Racing, the title sponsor of the Pro 11.50.

Qualifying

In the first round of qualifying, Wells and Zona lined up. Wells ran under with a 10.37, while Zona only ran an 11.22. Zona was working in a new clutch, which was the reason the 9-second car was only going 11's. Ironically, Zona's only qualifying pass would stand as the number one qualifier! Cavanagh took a solo pass and also ran under with a 10.48.

In the second round of qualifying Zona decided to sit out. Wells was trying to slow down the car and did with a 10.41, but it wasn't enough. Cavanagh was supposed to be slowing it down too, but went the wrong way with a quicker 10.32. There would be only two rounds of eliminations.

Round 1

Cavanagh and Wells lined up for the first round. This was to be a good race as Cavanagh is a skilled racer and Wells was eager to make a name for himself as a rookie in the Corvette racing series. Well skill won out over desire as Cavanagh nailed the tree with an outstanding .005 light to Wells' .060 reaction time. As Wells attempted to run Cavanagh down he ran under with a 10.485. Cavanagh also took care of the other end of the track running right on with a 10.508, a thirteen thousandths package! Zona lucked out in qualifying and received the bye into the final despite not being able to perform up to par. On his solo run, Zona slowed to a 21.176.

Round 2 - The Final

In the final round it was Cavanagh vs. Zona. Zona went red with a -.05 and ran 11.553. Cavanagh took the stripe and the win with a conservative 10.82. Cavanagh proved that he will be a force to be reckoned with this season. Shawn would like to thank his deceased father for the win. Zona will be spending a little more time dialing in his new combination. Wells will be working on all of the above. Edgar Perez and others will be showing up for the next race to add a little fuel to the fire!
