11/21/09 - Englishtown, NJ - The 2009 season for the American Racing Headers presented by Carroll's Rod and Racecraft came to a close today, one race short due to rainouts, and Michael Conway took all there was to be had today with a number 1 qualifier, event win and season Championship. Jay McCardle, coincidentally, took number two in all today with a number 2 qualifying position, event runner-up and a 2nd place finish in a the season points standings.

Qualifying

Michael Conway and Jay McCardle paired off for the first qualifier side-by-side. Conway in his Bronze colored 1986 Corvette jumped out of the gate first with a .034 reaction time and McCardle was not too far behind with a .051 green on the .400 pro tree. McCardle gained some ground in the 60' but not enough as Conway pulled away. Conway took the stripe and the number 1 qualifying position with an 8.667 at 163.14 mph while McCardle followed in his Novi supercharged ECS built 1997 Corvette with an 8.984 at 150.50 mph. The number one qualifying position was the third in three attempts for Conway this season. Neither driver felt they needed a second qualifying run so they saved the equipment for the first and final round battle.

Round 1 - The Final

The drivers swapped lanes for the first and final round of competition in the final race of the 2009 season. Jay McCardle staged the car in the left lane with Michael Conway to his right. As the drivers were setting the bottom bulbs to get the race going, McCardle burst through beams not able to hold the car back and taking a foul leaving before the tree activated. That gave the automatic win to Conway who blasted off the line with a .055 reaction time and put an exclamation point on the season with an 8.577 pass @ 161.52.

Awards and Payouts Today

  • Winner Michael Conway earned a payout of $100 cash and a trophy
  • Runner-up Jay McCardle earned a payout of $50 cash and a trophy
  • Number 1 Qualifier Michael Conway received a plaque for his 8.667 @ 163.14 qualifying run
  • Michael Conway received the Best Reaction Time plaque for the best winning reaction time in the first round at .055

2009 Points Standings

Congratulations go to Michael Conway who has captured the 2009 Pro 8 Shootout Championship. On the strength of three number 1 qualifiers, two race wins and one race runner-up, Mike has collected 214 points this season to take his first Pro 8 Shootout Championship. Conway joins Mark Shaw (2008, 2007), Angelo Valla (2006), Paul Ziajski (2005) and Mike Mitchell (2004) as Pro 8 Shootout Champions. Ironically the motor in the Conway car was once in the Mitchell car. Conway wins the title despite scoring less points than last year when he was the runner-up to Shaw. Jay McCardle moved himself into the second position with 145 points for the season on the strength of one win, one runner-up, one quarter final and was hurt by one event in which he hurt the car and was not able to make round 1. Angelo Valla finishes the season in third having attended two races and collecting 114 points. Mark Shaw was only able to attend one race this year and finishes fourth in the standings with 56 while Doug Ring rounds out the five drivers that entered the points chase with 35 points.

Next Race

As the season comes to a close, there are many decisions that have to be made. While the once popular and only category for heads up racing in the Corvette Challenge has seen a decline in attendance over the years, one can only hope for the best to come in the future. Together with Raceway Park, class sponsors, hopeful racers and the Corvette Challenge Coordinators we hope to make a decision that works for all involved. I personally would like to those of you that made the efforts to keep the class alive. I know that it take great personal sacrifice both physically and financial to compete at this level and hope that the racers in the class have enjoyed their time competing with the Corvette Challenge and continue to do so in the future. For further news on the Pro 8 Shootout, keep an eye out on wwww.corvettechallenge.info, the Drag Racing section of The Corvette Forum and your email.

As always, we couldn't enjoy our passion for racing without the tireless efforts of our coordinators - Edgar Perez, Bob Trieschmann and Dennis Kazimir. We'd be reduced to time shots only without our sponsors - many thanks for the continued support of
