Jay McCardle Wins Pro 8 Shootout Race 1 - Uncontested

by Edgar Perez

Qualifiers - American Racing Headers/a> Pro 8 Shootout
presented by Carroll's Rod & Racecraft
1  Jay McCardle, Jr. 5.953 118.95
04/04/09 - Englishtown, NJ - First of all, thank yout to American Racing Headers for returning as the Pro 8 Shootout title sponsor and Carroll's Rod and Racecraft for returning as the 2009 presenting sponsor. It was eighth mile racing again today just like we closed the 2008 season as the weather, again, did not cooperate with high winds making it not possible to run the full quarter. The first race of the season for the quickest Corvette class was low on the car count side. While expectations for the growth in the class was high coming into the season with returning racers and the fruition of promised new entries, it fell short of materializing. However, this did not deter Jay McCardle from entering his 1997 Nassau Blue East Coast Supercharging Paxton packing C5 Corvette from entering the class and taking all the points, hardware and cash in the class. The C5 Corvette now sports one of ECS's bolt on PowerGlide transmissions in addition to their supercharger. Defending Champion Mark Shaw had had his car on the track in 2009 but could not break a family engagement to enter the class today. New entrants George Smith, Alan Eckert (with the Green car), Doug Ring and Sonnie Pongonis, just did not get the cars ready in time for today's race but are hoping to enter the next race. Regulars, Michael Conway and Angelo Valla have branched out to compete in other 8.50 index points series' and this weekend happened to conflict with one and could not make our race. Regular Bill Maloney also had a commitment he could not break and did not attend. We hope to see many of these drivers and more in our next race.

Round 1 and Final

As Jay pulled in for the first and final round, the only thing that could prevent him for taking the win would be crossing the center line so he made sure that nothing would keep him from it and left soft with a .506 reaction time on the .400 pro tree. With a 1.397 short time, he was on the way to the win. He made a 5.990 @ 117.81 mph pass. This is Jay's first Pro 8 Shootout victory and gives him a comfortable points lead for the season. He also kept it abve the index to avoid having to take a penalty a points driver incurss when they run under the index.

Awards and Payouts Today

  • Winner Jay McCardle earned a payout of $100 cash and a trophy
  • Number 1 Qualifier Jay McCardle received a plaque for his 5.953 @ 118.95 qualifying run on the 5.45 1/8th mile index
  • Jay McCardle received the Best Reaction Time plaque for the best winning reaction time in the first round at .506

2009 Points Standings

As the only attendee, Jay McCardle walked away with a big points lead. He picks up 8 for qualifying number 1 and a total of 50 for the tech, stage and round win for a season total of 58. While a big lead, the next race may be a different story with the promise of greater numbers and tougher competition in the class...or maybe he just scared them all away? We will find out soon enough.
