05/12/07 - Englishtown, NJ - First our well wishes and thank to all the Mom's on this Mother's day weekend. Now we can report that David Shen drove his 1965 all motor Corvette to his second win an row and has taken a strong hold on first place on this our, third race of five in The Cartek Racing Pro 10.0 Index presented by Silly Goose Racing Stables. It was a tough. Our 2006 Champion, David Outten, Vienna, VA, put his Green 1990 Corvette back together for this one after missing the first two races on the double header weekend and was back with a vengeance taking the number 1 qualifying position. Our 2007 regulars were back for the most part and we had a driver, Marc Cantor, Lansdale PA, with a forged 346 - 9:1/F1 Procharger/AFR 225's, out for the first time as well. Nine drivers entered the class which meant someone was not going to make the field.

Qualifying

The best pass of the 1st round of qualifying was with Michael Conway and David Shen. The two left the line and ran side-by-by side the entire length in a run that resulted in top two qualifiers of the round. Conway took his 1997 Nitrous breather to number one spot with a 10.040 @ 132.83 and Shen to the number two spot at 10.059 @ 133.25. Both spots would hold for this round of qualifying. Outten made it three drives in the 10.0 range when he placed his 1990 in the third spot with a 10.085 @ 131.47, a little down on horsepower but it was the first pass since getting it back together on the over the winter rebuild. In the fourth spot was Wayne Keegan, Freehold, NJ, with his 1980 468 cid Corvette with a 10.172 @ 132.33. He was followed by Jerry Land, 10.300 @ 133.26, Tommy Michalkowski, 10.438 @ 132.41, Chris Young, 10.586 @ 134.35 and Marc Cantor, 10.967 @ 134.67. The ninth driver, me, did not make the call as we were got hit with the little gremlin again. The Vette Doctors, Carmen Melillo at the track and Dennis Hemmerly on the phone, worked feverishly to try and get it exorcised for the next and final qualifying attempt.

Conway and Shen did not improve on their stellar passes but unfortunately for them, David Outten did bumping both down a spot to 2 and 3 when he took over the number one qualifying position with a 10.018 @ 133.26 getting the missing horsepower back with a tweak. The only other driver to improve on his position was Chris Young who managed to put the tire to the ground better on the due to changed slicks bumped up to 20 psi with a 10.172 @ 134.56 taking the fifth position on the ladder. I, once again, failed to make the call to qualify. This time, when returning from the Corvette Challenge time trail, I picked up a foreign object in the left rear tire and the was greated by a quickly emptying snake sounding hissing as it emptied right before our eyes. I quickly ran to the truck and pulled out the spare Mickey Thompson drag radials I and Carmen and I went to work to change the wheels but it was too late as we were swapping we heard the cars making the second qualifier and we were nowhere near done. Had one of the two major motorcycle oil spills happened sooner in the day, I might have had a chance to make the field as the car is was definitely capable of running in the 10.6, 10.5 range and would have made for the quickest bump in the history of the class but it did not happen.

Round 1

First out was Michael Conway (2) vs. Jerry Land (6). Conway's season has taken and up turn since the last race when he has started to give "the brake" and the round was no different. Conway left Land at the starting line with a .039 to Land's .147 and was on the way to with another 10.0 taking the win with a 10.067 @ 130.02 to Land's 10.208 @ 137.30. Wayne Keegan (4) was off the tree first as will vs. Marc Cantor (8)in his 2001 Corvette. Keegan's car leaped off the line with a round best .025 reaction time and Cantor, well let's just say it was probably his first time at the pro tree and we applaud him for giving it a shot. Cantor had an issue and Keegan had him easily covered taking the win with a 10.141 @ 126.66 to his 13.328 @ 110.15. David Shen (3) vs. Tommy Michalkowski (7) were the next pair. Tommy and I kidded about fighting for the bump spot but he certainly would have had me covered today but not Shen. Shen actually left after Tommy with .162 to .154 but he had the ET with a 10.141 @ 126.66 to Tommy's twin APS turbo'd 10.409 @ 132.78. David Outten (1) would face Chris Young (5) in the final pair of the round. Young just recently starting working with his trans brake and it bit him this time as he was off the line with a red light, -.003. He just missed it and Outten was on the way to the next round. Both drivers backed off the pass to save the hardware for another day, Young at least.

Round 2

As one can expect, the top 4 qualifiers remained for the second round of competition and four different Corvette Generations represented. David Shen (3), in a C2 would take on David Outten (1) in the C4. These two were our top 2 points finishers last year and today qualified within .04 of each other so this could be a good one. It started out great as Outten got the jump with .020 to Shen's .028. It went downhill from there for Outten but not for Shen. Outten was out of it and Shen was gone with 10.133 @ 128 and Outten crossed with a 14. Wayne Keegan (4) in the C3 would face Michael Conway (2) in the C5. Conway running a hot streak of red lights came up on the wrong end this time. Keegan was away clean at .019 but Conway was red -.029. Even though the race was over, both drivers put on a show and ran them out to the finish. They finished with identical 10.12 elapsed times with Keegan's coming with an 8 @ 132.69 and Conway's coming with a 1 @ 134.20. Man that would have been close.

Final Round

The final was set for David Shen (3) vs. Wayne Keegan (4). Shen won the last race and Keegan run runner-up in the first race of the season. Shen appeared to have him covered by about a tenth in ET so Keegan would be looking for the hole shot. He left first with a.037 reaction time and Shen followed with a .043. They motored down the 1320 side-by-side in the very exciting final. Shen would have the horsepower to overcome the hole shot and take the win with a 10.065 @ 133.07 and Keegan came up just short with a 10.138 @ 132.01. Keegan was 6 thousandths better at the tree but Shen covered the quarter 6 hundredths quicker and was away with his second win in a row.

2007 Points Standings

David Shen took a commanding lead in the points with Chris Young failing to get out of the first round and capturing his second event win of the season. He now leads by 65 points over Wayne Keegan and 66 over Chris Young in third. Of note, the top two drivers will be invited to compete at the PC Richard and Sons show in August and it looks like Shen is a shoe in but Keegan and Young will have to battle it out and Conway can play in the picture as well. The leaders after our fourth race will be invited. Mark Shaw and Alan Eckert lost quite a bit of ground today as neither could make it to the race.
