Fred Vetter of Princeton, NJ became the 6th different winner of the 2001 Cartek
Corvette Challenge Drag Racing Series held at Raceway Park in Englishtown, NJ on
November 10, 2001. What a beautiful day we had for racing with the Density
Altitude hovering around zero, we were bound for some fast racing. The track
was full of Corvettes. This event was by far the largest Corvette Challenge
with 68 drivers making first round call. An additional 8 cars purchased tech
cards but did not make first round call either due to breakage or other obligations
that did not allow them to stay to make first round. The pits were filled
with many other Vette owners and spectators that came out to support the family and
friends. Fred Vetter had a tough day ahead of him with 68 competitors, it
would take 7 full rounds of elimination to be named the event winner. Fred
ran consistently all day in his 2000 Torch Red Cope with Florida tags. Fred
is no stranger to racing as he has a number of year's under his belt. At the
end of the event, Fred thanked John Mackey for running this fine event and giving
him and other Corvette racers a series to race in. The win jolted Fred in to
the top 16 in the points qualifying him for a special eliminator that will be run at
the next event on Saturday, November 17, 2001, the final event for the year that
will determine the overall champion for the year. More details can be found
at www.corvettechallenge.info. It will also be the last date on the
schedule for Raceway Park. Be sure and check for next years schedule at the
Corvette Challenge Web page or at www.etownraceway.com.
The final round had plenty of tension as two very consistent racers squared to
determine the winner. Fred Vetter dialed in 12.85 against Bob Trieschmann's
14.00. This is the second time this season Bob has made it to the finals and
had at point already taken over the overall points lead in the series and was
looking to add to it with another win. The drivers took off with very similar
lights. Bob left first with a .622 light and Fred followed with a .581 light.
At the top end, Bob was in the chase and was force to break out with a 13.904
against Fred's almost perfect 12.854. That was the third run in a row where
Fred was just within thousands of his dial of 12.85. We all know how hard it
is to the get a car to run within thousands of a second in two runs in a day, let
alone the three. Congratulations to Fred for winning and Bob for putting up a
tough fight.
Previous points leader Bill Martinson had a good day also but fell victim to Fred
in Round 5 leaving him now one point behind the new leader, Bob Trieschmann.
Mike Jubanyik (HPDrifter on the www.corvetteforum.com) had an outstanding day going
6 rounds and jumping up to 6th position for the year. Mike also missed two
events this year so that is a strong feat.
The John Panuzzo Jr. Memorial Trophy was awarded to Tony Bounassisi of Trevose,
PA for the best reaction time in the first round. Tony had a .503 light in
the first round. Tony, who was recently elected to the board of his local
club, The Corvette Club of Delaware Valley (CCDV), which can be reached at www.ccdv.com, has come to many of these
events and is responsible for getting over 10 cars from his club to come to this
event. We appreciate the support Tony and the CCDV have given to the Corvette
challenge Drag Racing Series. A good reaction time can put your opponents
back to the wall so practice, practice, practice. Congratulations go to Tony.
